Coonskin Park was founded over 70 years ago by a group of Kanawha County residents. It is the closest park to downtown Charleston, and the park for residents on the lower Elk River and local communities on the Elk. The Kanawha County Park and Recreation Department promotes this Park as having "over a thousand acres of woodland nature," that it offers hiking and outdoor pavilion rentals, access to the Elk River, and multiple opportunities for hiking and biking. You can read what the Parks Department says HERE. The Park is even on the WV Waterfalls Trail for the Coonskin Park Grotto.

These forested hiking trails and the scenic grotto will be destroyed by the proposed airport runway expansion. The airport wants to level the Park and take 26 million cubic yards of dirt and build it up in a 200-foot-high pile for a longer runway. A project this large has never been done in the United States. No more forests. No more hiking and biking. No more scenic waterfalls. There has already been one slope failure collapse at the airport. A collapse if this project were built could threaten the Elk River. You can read more about the proposed runway expansion at the Airport Project Website and the threats to the Park on the Airport Website (page 17!), our Facebook page, and our Save the Park website. Please join our Facebook page to stay up to date.

This project is NOT a done deal! We, together, can stop this project. Please sign this Petition TODAY and help save OUR PARK!

We will send this Petition with your name, city, and zip code to the Parks and Recreation Department, the Kanawha County Commission, the Federal Aviation Administration - and anyone else that can stop this bad idea. Please provide your email address if you'd like to receive important updates from Save Coonskin Park!

Here's the Petition:

I strongly oppose the proposed Yeager Airport runway expansion. This project will level Coonskin Park; and destroy the forested hiking trails, many of the family pavilions, and the unique Grotto Waterfall.
